High Fives & Hisses

High fives

To Wayne Wickard and his Wickard Companies for making such a huge pledge to the Steuben County United Way. Wickard is pledging 2005 profits from his Steuben County units to the United Way drive that just kicked off. Wickard estimated that the United Way’s take could be upward of $100,000. That’s huge. Wayne Wickard, you truly have a heart of gold.

To Bill Bryan of Angola for all of his hard work with the Steuben County Bike Trail Committee. Bryan has worked hard for the development of the Steuben Trail ever since the committee first got going. We applaud Bryan for sticking to a project that, quite frankly, was not about to happen over night. It has taken some four years of work to make this project happen, and Bryan has been there all the way.

To the folks who have been putting on Fall Fest in downtown Angola for so many years. Any time an effort takes volunteer labor to keep it going, you run the risk of burnout and event failure. There are many people who have been working on this festival tirelessly for years. They all deserve our thanks.

To Waste Watchers of Steuben County for completing the monumental task of paying off its legal bills from a long and successful fight against a landfill in an ill-suited location near Hamilton.

To dozens of high school students who participated in the second annual United Way of DeKalb County Days of Youth Caring. They made productive use of their free time while fellow students were taking ISTEP+ tests, and they participated in greater numbers than the first year.

To the support staffs, including band parents, who made this year’s band competitions at Angola and East Noble such rousing successes.

To the Kendallville Pizza Hut for putting on a day-long fund-raiser to help the Kendallville Fire Department with its efforts to replace the city’s outdated tornado warning system.

Hisses

To the vandals who struck at West Noble High School last weekend.
